The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) through the Building Disaster Resilient Communities (BDRC) Project honoured 28 vulnerable communities for their work in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) at the BDRC’s Closing Ceremony which was held yesterday at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston.

The ceremony also acknowledged the work of the Parish Councils and Government and Non Government Agencies who were all on hand to receive their award of recognition which was presented to them by the Minister of State for Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Colin Fagan and Senior Officials from the ODPEM.

In 2008 the ODPEM signed an agreement with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to implement measures for building community resiliency.   The project sought to build or strengthen the capacity for disaster response and management in 28 communities through training, preparation of community disaster plans and implementation of small community disaster risk reduction projects.

The design of the “Building Disaster Resilient Communities” Project recognized the need to create an enabling environment and implemented the project via three components –

  •       Strengthening Partnerships for effective DRR planning and action,
  •       Establishing and/or strengthening community teams for Community Disaster Risk  Management (C-DRM) and
  •       Identifying and supporting the implementation of a community-based DRR initiative or project.

The Closing Ceremony highlighted the various initiatives that have been implemented under the project through the ODPEM with the support from the CIDA and a number of partner agencies.

The BDRC project will officially come to a close in March 2012.
