Bungling Health Minister should exit office now says G2K

Generation 2000 (G2K), Vice President Matthew Samuda today called on the Simpson-Miller led administration to remove Health Minister, Dr. Fenton Ferguson from office forthwith.

Mr. Samuda’s call comes on the heels of widespread dissatisfaction by staff and users of Jamaica’s public health facilities and the continuing devastating impact of the chikungunya virus. He noted that, “with Hospitals and clinics literally in their worst state for many years and the Chikungunya virus claiming lives and costing the nation over 13 million man hours and approximately $7 billion of GDP in the space of a few months and with these issues largely linked to the Minister’s arrogant negligence, poor leadership skills and incompetence, the government must without further delay relieve the Minister of his duties.”

Mr. Samuda said that following Dr. Ferguson’s dismissal, the government must move urgently to reform the public health system to achieve greater efficiencies and see to a general improvement in services. He noted that reform will likely have to include personnel changes at the upper echelons of the system so as to ensure that competent persons are in charge and able to cope effectively with limited resources.

He further noted that the Government must send a clear signal that it is indeed concerned about the health and welfare of Jamaicans and make the necessary allocations within the new budget about to be tabled by Dr Peter Phillips.

Mr. Samuda said that the handling of the chikungunya virus represents a literal case study on Ministerial failure at every level.
