The Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM, has recorded its first fatality for the month of April and has launched a probe into this death. The civilian, who has been identified as 27 year old security guard, Sashan Hibbert, was shot and killed on April 1, 2012, at 36A Henley Road, Kingston 11 at approximately 5:50 a.m.

The report received by INDECOM states that Hibbert was among four (4) men who were together in the vicinity of 36A Henley Road when the police visited the area. They were acting on information, when a team of officers went into the area where they saw the four men and upon the approaching the men, they allegedly opened fire.  The police returned the fire and one (1) man was shot.  The other three (3) men jumped a fence and escaped.  The injured man was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Eye witnesses however gave a conflicting account of the incident. They allege that Hibbert was by himself at the construction site where he worked when he was shot and killed and there was no shootout between him and the police.

The police reported that one (1) 9mm Berretta pistol was taken from the deceased man.  A .38 revolver with serial numbers partially erased and an AK 47 rifle were also recovered when the other three men fled, leaving the weapons behind.

The scene was processed by the INDECOM Forensics Team. The hands of the police officers involved in the shooting as well as those of the deceased man were swabbed.  Notices were also served for the involved officers to give statements.

Investigators are appealing to anyone with information that can assist with this investigation to call its office at 1-876-968-8875.
