The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising that arising from the current fire at the Riverton Dump, a thick smoke cover is being experienced in sections of the Corporate Area, with significant impact being reported in parts of Portmore.

While the fire has been contained, an increase in the volume of smoke permeating the general environment has necessitated that caution be exercised when traversing the affected areas.

Reports from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) have indicated that excessive discharge of smoke from the dump contains Particulate Matters (PM) which can cause health impacts on the residents.

Person are being advised to report to their physician or general health facility should they experience respiratory conditions as a result of the smoke.

Safety Tips

1. Avoid or reduce exposure to smoke by closing window and doors and remain indoors as much as possible. This is especially so for those persons who suffer from allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions; and elderly and young.
2. Cover nose and mouth with a clean wet rag or cloth to minimize effects of the smoke.
3. Avoid exposing laundry outdoors since these can become contaminated, stained and foul
