Indecom launches probe into shooting death of Olympic Garden resident

The Independent Commission of Investigations, INDECOM, has launched a probe into the shooting death of a civilian along Robins Road, Olympic Gardens on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at approximately 3:05 a.m.
The deceased has been identified as Dwaine Anthony Smith.

Reports are that a team of police officers from the Hunts Bay Police Station were on patrol in the area and on entering Robins Road in Olympic Gardens, they saw three (3) men along the road.  The police stopped the men and requested search of their persons when one (1) of the men pulled a firearm and fired at the police.  The police returned the fire and one of the men was shot while the other two escaped into a nearby gully.  The man was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  A 9 mm Taurus pistol with thirteen (13) 9mm cartridges were recovered at the scene. 

No eyewitnesses have been identified in this incident.
The scene was processed by INDECOM’s Forensics Team.  The hands of three (3) police officers involved in the shooting as well as the deceased man were swabbed and notices were served on the concerned officers to give statements.
