Timely and Productive meeting says Minister

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT AND WORKS | 2012-04-12 16:12:00

Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing, Dr. Morais Guy is hailing the meeting with taxi operators, SSP Radcliffe Lewis and other Ministry officials this morning, as a timely and productive one.

Coming out of the meeting, it has been decided that taxi operators who were authorized by the Transport Authority to operate between Half Way Tree and the University of the West Indies (UWI) will be allowed to continue doing so, providing they carry three passengers and do not pick up and let off anyone along the way. Additionally, these operators will be allowed to share the Spencer James Drive with the buses belonging to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC). Dr. Guy also used the opportunity to advise operators to conduct themselves responsibly on the road and to, as far as is possible ensure that their colleagues do the same as they are involved in an extremely important area of national life.

As it pertains to the Half Way Tree to Mountain View Avenue, the Minister emphasized that the current arrangements where only licensed operators will be able to ply that route will still be observed. He said that the monitoring of that route, in addition to others within the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR), by the police and the Transport Authority will continue.

In the meantime, Mr. Edgerton Newman, President of the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) who was in attendance at the meeting expressed his gratitude for a positive meeting but used the opportunity to call for a comprehensive Transport Policy.

Minister Guy noted that a Transport Policy is currently being crafted and that that issue along with others articulated in the discussions will form the basis for future meetings with the transport operators, at which time it is expected that deliberations will be with a more comprehensive body of operators than those which were in attendance at today’s meeting.
