With eight finals scored on day one of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association (JTA) Sagicor National Athletics Championships, constant challengers St. Andrew have taken the early initiative. St. Andrew has already shown their intent to reclaim the title they last won in 2013 with dominant performances in both the Boys’ and Girls’ section of the two day championships to lead the overall standings with 69 points followed by Portland with 38, Kingston 29.5, Clarendon 29 and defending champions St. Catherine on 24 to round out the top 5.

The Marlene Smith coached team has already secured 37 points after 4 finals in the female section, to lead Portland (25), Clarendon (18), Kingston (15.5) and St. Thomas (12) to round out the top five. In the boys’ section St. Andrew also dominated the early proceedings finishing the day on 32 points, 10 more than Manchester (22) in second. St. Catherine (14) and Kingston (14) were inseparable for third with Portland (13) close behind and Clarendon (11) closing out the top five. Peaks

St. Andrew’s charge was headed by strong performances in the field events with the pick of the bunch coming from Anna-kay Emanuel in the girls’ shot put open. Emanuel threw 10.83 meters for first place, while setting a new meet record, erasing the 2013 mark of 10.73 meters held by Qute-Ann Robb.

Action in The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA), Sagicor National Athletics Championships will resume tomorrow (Saturday, May 16) with a strong push expected from Portland and St. Catherine carrying hopes of a repeat of their 2014 triumph. Scouts and coaches alike are expected to be out in full force on championship day, as the championships have become renowned to produce quality young athletes who often times achieve immense athletic success.

Held since 1962 the championships have helped nurture athletes such as Dr. The Honourable Usain St. Leo Bolt, Nesta Carter, Yohan Blake and the superb Bertland Cameron. In fact Jamaica’s 2012 London Olympics silver medal winning quartet of Veronica Campbell-Brown, Sherone Simpson, Kerron Stewart and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce all participated in the JTA Sagicor National Athletics Championships.
