Chang reiterates call for comprehensive environment policy

Jamaica Labour Party | 2012-04-24 09:42:00

Opposition Spokesman for Housing, Water and the Environment, Dr. Horace Chang today reiterated his call for the Government to urgently formulate a comprehensive Environment Policy in order to protect the natural environment while managing the waste from the built environment.

The Policy Dr. Chang said would better coordinate the efforts of the Ministries of Environment and Health, Parish Councils, the National Solid Waste Management Authority, the National Environment and Planning Agency, non governmental organizations and other stakeholders in effectively tackling the grave environmental challenges plaguing the country. Further more the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party is more than willing to contribute as best as it possibly can in the formulation of the policy, Dr. Chang said.

As it stands, Dr. Chang said the lack of a clear direction in addressing recent and major environmental challenges is very troubling. Dr. Chang again pointed to the current rat infestation issues in the Kingston Metropolitan area, the recent Riverton Dump blaze and smoke debacle, and the piling up of solid waste throughout the island as clear and present signals of the need for an effective Environment Policy. These challenges he said put the health and well being of the population at risk and contribute to the destabilization the country’s environment.

Dr. Chang said that whilst the need for short term improvement is necessary, the country stands to benefit immensely from a medium and long term policy arrangement as a means of promulgating sustainable development and safeguarding the health of the citizenry.
