Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen says Jamaicans can show their appreciation for our athletes by taking the message of resilience and unity which their performance at the recently concluded IAAF World Athletics Championships symbolizes.

As he and Lady Allen congratulate the athletes whose combined performances earned Jamaica second place in the overall medal standings at the World Athletics Championships, Sir Patrick Allen said the camaraderie which fueled communities across Jamaica and overflowed into major city centres such as Half-Way Tree and Downtown Kingston, is a clear signal that not only is sports unifying, but that Jamaicans have the capacity to unite around a national cause.  He said this euphoria must prevail in all situations as Jamaicans unite to realize our development goals.

He had high praises for Usain Bolt as well as other athletes who performed exceptionally well, even as they were recuperating from injuries. Novelene Williams-Mills’ triumph over cancer and her victory as part of the winning team in the women 4x400m finals received special mention from His Excellency.

The Governor-General said that the success of our athletes is “a true reflection of the philosophy behind the Black, Gold and Green of our flag.” He noted that throughout history Jamaicans have experienced challenges and setbacks and we have also stumbled a few times but like true champions, we always bounce back to claim the prize. Sir Patrick Allen stated that the prize in this instance must be to make Jamaica a place where all Jamaicans are proud to call ‘this little’ rock home.
