The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) has completed installation of solar panels at 12 of 15 schools which are slated to receive grid tied solar photovoltaic (PV) systems under a $62 million project.

To date panels have been mounted at Ardenne High, Clarendon College, Glenmuir High, Hampton School for Girls, Munro College, Norman Manley High, Old Harbour High, St. Elizabeth Technical High, Vere Technical High, Dinthill Technical High, St. Catherine High and Wolmers Girls’ Schools.

It is anticipated that the systems at the 12 facilities should be fully operational later this month, which will complete the first phase of the project.   Phase two will involve installations at three additional schools; Kingston High, Rose Hill Primary and St. Hugh’s High School, and the main offices of three Public Sector entities; the Scientific Research Council, (SRC) the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the PCJ.

The project is being implemented by the PCJ as part of its efforts to reduce the public sector’s energy spend.  The collective output of the 18 systems will be about 344,000 Kilowatt hours per year.  Subsequently, when all of the systems are operational, the government expects to save an estimated $16 million annually on electricity bills.

“Solar PV systems should be up and running at twelve schools very early in the new academic year so those institutions should soon see savings on their electricity bills,” Winston Watson, the PCJ’s Group General Manager explained.

Mr. Watson however, cautioned stakeholders at the benefiting institutions against becoming complacent about energy conservation.  “Even though the PV systems should help to lower energy bills the staff and students at each of these schools should still be rigorous about conservation and efficient energy usage in order to reap continual savings from this investment,” he said.
