The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce in collaboration with the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) will host Jamaica’s inaugural Competition Day Seminar on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. The Seminar will be held under the theme, “Transforming Jamaica Digitally: from Flintstones to Jetsons”, focusing on current developments in the telecommunications sector and implications for the future of the sector.

In commenting on the seminar, Mr. David Miller, Executive Director of the Fair Trading Commission stated, “a strong competition regime is always to the benefit of the consumer. This reduces costs to the consumer whilst improving the level of service and offerings. Nowhere is this more evident than in the telecommunications sector. The seminar is, therefore, a chance to discuss the development of the telecommunications sector in Jamaica and learn from the best practices of countries that have previously undergone this stage of development.”

Among the pertinent issues which will be explored are:
• What could these recent developments be telling us about the future landscape of the telecommunications sector?
• What is the scope for regulation and or antitrust enforcement in such an industry in the future?
• Is it inevitable that the significant gains in consumer surplus in the voice market to date will subside as voice operators exploit convergence in the telecommunications industry?

• Could the experiences of more mature jurisdictions serve as a guide for what could be expected for Jamaica?

The seminar will feature representatives of the Mona School of Business & Management, Digicel Jamaica Limited, Flow, the Office of Utilities Regulation, and competition agencies from the United States, Spain and Chile.

The general public is invited to hear the discussions and to participate in the question and answer session. The Seminar will run from 9 am to midday. There is no charge for attending. The event precedes the Latin American Competition Forum which is being hosted by the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB), the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the FTC.
