INDECOM probes shooting death of St. Catherine resident

The Independent Commission of Investigations is currently probing the shooting death of a St Catherine resident on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at approximately 10:30 p.m.

Dead is Novardo Shawn Thomas of 8 King Street Spanish Town St. Catherine.

The report received from the police is that a joint police/military team consisting of one (1) police officer and four (4) soldiers were on foot patrol along King Street in Spanish Town when a man was seen acting suspiciously. He was approached and the police officer allegedly shouted “police don’t move don’t move”; the man allegedly turned and faced the officer and pointed a gun at him. The police fired in the direction of the man who fell to the ground.

It was further reported that a firearm was taken from the man and that on examination it proved to be an Intra-Tech submachine gun; it had no rounds in the magazine. The injured man was rushed to the Spanish Town hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.

Witnesses alleged that Shawn was in the process servicing his truck when several explosions were heard. About 3 – 5 minutes after the explosions persons went to enquire. It is alleged that several police officers and soldiers were seen who instructed them not to come outside their premises. It is further alleged that Shawn’s slippers was noticed in the road and subsequently his body was seen lying by the side of the road in a gutter.

The incident scene was processed by INDECOM’s Forensics Team, the body of the deceased was processed and the police officers involved were served with Notices to furnish INDECOM with statements.
