The JMA fully endorses Rule of Law Working Group

Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association | 2015-11-16 00:00:00

The Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) is in full support of the “Rule of Law Working Group” recently established at the Partnership for Jamaica (PFJ) Council Meeting. The initiative is reflective of a clear national consensus and support, allowing wide participation of state and non-state actors in the fight to combat crime and violence and ultimately secure a safer Jamaica.

Violent crimes continue to be a major hindrance to the growth and development of Jamaica, as well as to the over 72,000 workers and their families that are in the membership of the JMA. The JMA has long recognized that a country’s exposure to crime and violence significantly impacts the private sector’s development, investment climate and quality of life for all Jamaicans. This underscores the importance of a national coalition against crime, manifested in the establishment of the Rule of Law Working Group.

The JMA applauds the efforts of the PFJ in aiming to build consensus on a matter of such critical importance.

The initiative will certainly aid in enhancing participation and accountability in the fight against crime, a commonality which we all share. In addition, it gives the citizens of Jamaica a greater influence in the national effort to reduce the high levels of crime and violence and reinforces the notion that an effective crime fighting strategy is dependent on the creation of social partnerships.

The Rule of Law Working Group will be chaired by Mr. Howard Mitchell, Deputy President of the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) and an attorney at Law. Members of the Working Group will be drawn from the PFJ, which encompasses representatives of the state, private sector, civil society and other interest groups.

The JMA continues to endorse initiatives such as this, to create a safer environment for all Jamaicans.
