CAFFE media release on Olint

CITIZENS ACTION FOR PRINCIPLE AND INTEGRITY | 2012-05-11 08:42:00

Citizens Action For Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE) joins with all well-thinkingcitizens who are deeply disturbed by the report that the High Court in the Turksand Caicos Islands has ordered David Smith to recover large sums of money whichare alleged to have been dispensed to political parties and politicians in Jamaica.

There have been admissions, absence of denials as well as denials of the receiptof the sums alleged. There is no doubt that Mr. Smith’s schemes have beenlargely discredited and he has been found guilty of serious offences of afraudulent nature. The source of the funds he dispensed are clearly tainted.

This affair emphasises the need for urgent reform of the law relating to thefinancing of political parties. It points to the dangers of political parties andpoliticians being caught in the vice of accepting and utilising money from criminaland corrupt sources as well as dubious sources.

CAFFE therefore repeats the call it made from as long as May 2010 toGovernment and Parliament to expedite the passage of legislation for theimplementation of the Electoral Commission’s recommendation with respect topolitical party financing.
