Transport Minister alarmed at rising road fatalities

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT AND WORKS | 2016-01-21 00:00:00

Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Dr. Omar Davies is expressing shock at the number of road deaths since the start of the year. This, as 21 persons have been killed in road traffic crashes in 19 days.

According to Dr. Davies, statistics from the Road Safety Unit within the Ministry reveal that there has been a 31 per cent increase in road fatalities when compared to the similar period in 2015. Of the 21 deaths; 13 were motorcyclists, 3 were pedestrians, 2 were passengers of private motor cars and 1 death recorded each in the category of pillion passenger, public passenger vehicle and commercial motor car.

Minister Davies says these figures are alarming, especially as they relate to motorcyclists.  He condemns the behaviour and conduct of many road users, who from time to time disregard the road code resulting in crashes and fatalities. He is appealing to all road users to be more aware of the road environment and obey the rules of safe driving on the roads.

According to Minister Davies, while legislation, enforcement and education play an integral role in helping to change the behaviour of road user’s, one cannot overlook or overemphasize the individual’s responsibility for him or herself and other road users.  Minister Davies says his Ministry will be rolling out an All Island Public Education Campaign to sensitize the country on the new provisions within the Road Traffic Act, which are aimed at improving safety on our roads, as well as saving lives. The new Road Traffic Act is expected to be debated in the Senate by the end of this Month.

Last year, the country recorded a total of 379 deaths as a result of road traffic crashes. A breakdown of the figures showed that; 111 were motorcyclists, 92 were pedestrians, 52 were private motor car passengers, 66 were drivers of private motor cars and 23 were pedal cyclists.
