Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) | 2016-02-17 00:00:00

With a little over one month remaining to the March 15 Income Tax due date, activities are in high gear by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) to help hundreds of small businesses and self-employed persons prepare, through its free Special Taxpayer Assistance Programme (STAP) now under way island wide and will run until the end of March. The STAP sessions are designed to assist business owners and self-employed individuals with a gross annual income of less than $5M to prepare their Annual Income Tax Return for the year 2015 and to declare their Estimated Income and Tax Payable for the year 2016, due March 15, as well as to assist employers to complete and submit their Annual Employers Return due March 31.

TAJ personnel will be offering support to taxpayers to guide them through the online filing process, as well as provide assistance with the preparation of the relevant forms and documentation. A list of locations for the STAP sessions may be found on the TAJ website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm along with other information and documents related to Income Tax.

In addition to the STAP sessions, TAJ will be partnering with a few business associations that cater to small businesses, such as the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC) and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Alliance, to assist their clients and members with assistance in filing their tax returns. These special support sessions will be held at the offices of the specified organisation.

Taxpayers who wish to avail themselves of these services are asked to take their business documents, such as Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN), bank statements, purchase invoices, expense receipts, sales records, utility bills and any other records that can be used to verify their income and expenses when attending the sessions.

A major focus of the STAP sessions will be registering persons and assisting them to file online, using the new Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS). In December 2015, TAJ rolled out the Income Tax component of RAiS, which now allows more options and added convenience to taxpayers. The upgraded online tax service allows users to not just file their income tax returns online, but to also pay using automated direct banking, create a payment plan, view filing and payment history, generate statement of accounts, and apply for their TCC electronically, instead of having to visit a tax office to do those transactions.
