No Fire at Riverton Disposal Site

National Solid Waste Management Authority | 2012-06-12 15:15:00

Several motorists travelling along the Mandela Highway, Spanish Town Road and the Portmore Leg of Highway 2000 between the hours of 6a.m. and 9a.m. today may have noticed a blanket of smoke coming from the direction of the Riverton Community.

The NSWMA wishes to advise that this was domestic fire set by residents within their immediate living quarters in the community. Since earlier this year, we have been seeking to curtail this practice through rigorous enforcement initiatives, getting the assistance of the Jamaica Fire Department as well as with Public Education and Community intervention programmes.

The Authority wishes to place on record that there was no fire at the Riverton Disposal Site this morning and that a story posted earlier today on the Jamaica Observer’s website  titled ‘Photo: Man of unsound mind lights fire at Riverton’ is inaccurate.
The story intimates that smoke this morning billowed from a section of the Riverton City Landfill, the result of a fire set by a man of unsound mind. A resident from the community was quoted as saying this was not the first time that the said man was setting fire at the facility and that the fire is usually left unchecked until it burns out.

The story is misleading and we urge responsible journalism by checking the authenticity of stories and that the contents of such articles posted are accurate. The Authority wishes to remind all media houses that the Community Relations department is willing to provide the necessary information once requested.
