Kingston, Jamaica – September 26, 2016: Five recent university graduates, who secured employment at the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) under the company’s Graduate Internship Programme, were formally inducted into the organisation at a ceremony which was held recently at the PCJ Auditorium in New Kingston.

The aspiring young professionals have been placed in various departments within the organisation including Human Resources and Administration, Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency, Property, Accounts and Internal Audit.  The newcomers are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the company’s operations while learning from the experienced professionals in their chosen disciplines.

The 2016 intake is the second cohort of graduates to be hired under the Programme. At the recent induction, the PCJ’s Human Resource and Administration Manager, Kirk Johnson conveyed his excitement at the prospect of new thinking within the organisation.

“We are happy to have launched the graduate internship programme and even more excited to be welcoming another group of bright, articulate, young people who we have no doubt will make a significant contribution to the company’s performance,” he said.

“Last year, our first cohort quickly integrated into the company and while they developed technical and professional skills, the PCJ benefitted from their new ideas and got valuable suggestions for new approaches,” Johnson added.

With the objective of assisting tertiary graduates to gain meaningful work experience in their field of study, nine school-leavers were welcomed into the organisation at an inaugural ceremony in July 2015. Over the course of one year those interns worked in various Departments of the Corporation and several have gone on to secure permanent employment at other organisations.

“We know that most recent university graduates face challenges gaining employment because they lack experience but through this initiative we give youngsters an avenue to overcome that obstacle,” said Winston Watson, Group General Manager at the PCJ.  “I am always impressed with the gratitude and enthusiasm of the youngsters when they come on board and we hope to continue this programme to give our young people an opportunity to showcase their talent.”
