The Jamaica International Arbitration Centre (JAIAC) will host Arbitration Week 2018 under the theme
“Arbitration on the Move: Framework, Industries and Economic Development”. The JAIAC was
established to promote the use of arbitration, mediation and other forms of alternative to the court
dispute resolution in Jamaica.
Arbitration Week 2018 will be staged from 24-30 June 2018 (the JCC is a partner in this the 2
nd

what we consider a landmark event that supports the positioning of Jamaica as a competitive location
for Commercial Arbitration & Mediation).
This year’s Arbitration Week starts with three (3) days of FIDIC Training Workshops on 25-27 June, then
Maurice Stoppi Lecture & Cocktail Reception on 27 June at the Spanish Court Hotel and features two(2)

and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards and culminates with Jamaica Night at the ‘Ruins’ UWI, Mona
Vistors’ Lodge, 29 June.
The Conference will focus on such topics as:

A distinguished selection of Arbitration practitioners from a variety of Caribbean countries, will also participate in the conference.
The New York Convention 60th Anniversary Conference is being held in Jamaica as an important event to celebrate what is universally recognized as the most accepted UN Convention in the field of economic law and development. Its importance is such that states that have not adopted and enforced it are clearly disadvantaged in the area of international trade and investment.
The conference is being facilitated by the Jamaica International Arbitration Centre in collaboration with the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, and the supporting institutions include United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, UWI Regional, JAMPRO, Development Bank of Jamaica, National Housing Trust, Organisation of American States, Miami International Arbitration Society, Jamaica Economic Zone Authority and the Florida Br Association.
The event is getting good attention, with benefit that can be leveraged for national development. It has, for example, been featured on the homepage of UNCITRAL (see www.uncitral.org) and is also being promoted through the Florida Bar, JAMPRO, JAMBAR, and otherwise.
