The HEART Trust/NTA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF) last month to expand training and development opportunities for local firms. The signing took place at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston and will strengthen the collaboration between the two organizations in 2019.

“The HEART trust is delighted to be cementing our longstanding partnership with JEF which is vital for the holistic development of the Jamaican labour force. If we intend to compete in the global labour market, we must ensure that our workers are trained at the highest level”, said Dr Janet Dyer, Managing Director of the HEART Trust/NTA. “This will not only increase the productivity and profit of the market, but it ensures that we are operating at the highest business standards”.

This partnership will allow the agency to develop more customizable programmes that are National Vocational Qualification of Jamaica (NVQ-J) and Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) accredited for the workforce.

“The Jamaica Employers’ Federation welcomes this MOU. We see it as very important to encourage that is not only a good to be certified but it also a good path to entrepreneurship. The NVQ-J certification is good for Jamaica as it will provide many opportunities to markets here and in the Caribbean”, said David Wan, President of the Jamaica Employer’ Federation.

Under the agreement, the business community also committed to accepting more certification obtained at HEART as a valid qualification for job-seekers. This will increase the number of trainees entering the labour force at various stages of the labour market.

“Our people are our greatest natural resources. However, what we find is that we are steeped in the belief that if you don’t have a degree, then you aren’t qualified. But, this is in stark contrast to what exists in other developed countries and we have to change this culture and partnerships like these (with the JEF) signal change”, said Edward Gabbidon, Chairman of the HEART Trust/NTA.

The Agency will also continue to provide labour market information to JEF to enable the Organization to respond better to workforce needs.
