The Flow Foundation has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to heighten awareness among children, adolescents and young adults about dangers that lurk in the online space. On February 5, both entities will join with thousands across the globe to observe Safer Internet Day under the theme “Together for a Better Internet”.

More than 250 students in primary schools across the island are now being trained by the Flow Foundation to become online safety monitors among for their peers and in their communities.  Flow  will also be leading the local charge within another at-risk stakeholder group in the online space –the elderly. On February 1, the company began hosting workshops with children between the ages of 7 and 11 while a session is planned with senior citizens for February 7 that will also educate them about safe practices while in the online space.  Simultaneously, UNICEF has also issued a poll via its U-Report social messaging platform to measure experiences and attitudes with regard to online safety among children and youth ages 13-29 across the island.

Preliminary results of the poll, which is open until midnight on Safer Internet Day, highlight some major online risks. Forty-five per cent said they have agreed to meet up with someone they do not know. 57 per cent admitted having “sexted” or received sexually explicit images. On the positive side, only 10% said they would do nothing if they saw someone being attacked, threatened or victimised online.

Following an online safety workshop hosted with students at the Ocho Rios Primary School, Suzette Barnes Wilson is now calling on parents to do more to educate their children about safety online. “Parents buy these devices for the children and many of them are not aware of the dangers online and so they are not able to help their children,” Barnes -Wilson commented. “Following the session with Flow, they  (the students) have now become more aware and we will be allowing them to become ambassadors and cascading the information to their peers,” she added.
