Jamaicans can now enjoy the benefits of a smartphone-enabled emergency dispatch service which provides an instant response in the event of a medical emergency and allows access to immediate roadside assistance – all with the touch of a button.

Local technology start-up, First Responder’s Technology Ltd., recently launched First Alert - a smart mobile-enabled emergency response app that connects subscribers to a 24-hour dispatch centre.

Emergency dispatch services are used in the United States, Canada and Europe to coordinate communications between police officers, firefighters, and paramedics to ensure a safe, swift and appropriate response to an emergency. The services are often credited for offering timely aid and medical assistance when people need it most.

“The idea for First Alert came to me after repeatedly seeing media reports about citizens being unable to access efficient and timely emergency response services during times of critical need. We believe that First Alert provides an innovative response to this serious issue, and through the harnessing of technology, we hope to improve the lives of citizens in Jamaica and across the globe,” stated the company’s founder, Aldain Reid.

The First Alert app allows customers to input their personal information including basic demographic data, medical history and a next of kin that can be contacted in the event of an emergency. Once a user makes contact to the First Alert contact centre via the app, their call is immediately handled by a trained Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) professional. The EMD professional has the ability to access the caller’s profile, medical history and precise location to provide emergency assistance in the shortest possible timeframe.

Technology plays an important role in bringing this impactful service to life.

“Our emergency response platform uses cloud voice technology via a smartphone app. We use this service to connect our users with voice calls to our Emergency Contact Centre. This is made possible through C&W Business Jamaica and their Managed Cloud Voice service,” stated Reid.

He continued, “we are very pleased with the flexibility, range of features and scalability that C&W Business Jamaica provides through its Managed Cloud Voice service. Indeed, it’s important to us to have a technology growth partner that is in our corner as we expand our business into the global marketplace.”

Commenting on the partnership, Delroy Mclean, Senior Director of C&W Business Jamaica stated, “we first engaged Aldain as a start-up when all he had was a dream of where he wanted to take his business. We worked with him to ensure that we provided the right technology to support the build out of his operations and today, we have Jamaica’s first smartphone-enabled Emergency Dispatch Platform. In short, our partnership with First Alert is a story of how we grow with our customers.”

First Responder’s Technology Ltd. was the recipient of the 2018 Jamaica National Innovation Award in the category of Health and Safety, in recognition of their creative use of technology and the importance of the service that First Alert will provide to the Jamaican society. Android users are able to download the First Alert app via the Google Playstore while Iphone users can access it via the App Store.
