On Saturday August 4th, international attention will be focused on Jamaica while the country is in the midst of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of independence when at 7:30pm that evening HBO premieres the feature “ Where The Music Is Alive: Jamaica Jazz & Blues 2012".

HBO’s crew visited Jamaica in January to film the thirty-minute documentary about the rhythmic beats of the 2012 Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival and to highlight the island’s appeal as a sunshine paradise.  The documentary also features special Jamaica 50 messages from notable Jamaican personalities and local and international artistes including, headliner of this year’s festival, Celine Dion. Flow collaborated with the Jamaica Tourist Board and the organizers of the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, to host the HBO crew, for the three-day festival.

In speaking on the significance of the documentary, Lori del Vecchio, Director, Affiliate Sales & Marketing HBO Latin America Group, said that she was thrilled to be sharing in the country’s celebratory moment. “By investing in local productions, we continue to bring Jamaica’s cultural wealth and natural beauty to a forefront throughout both the Caribbean and Latin American regions,” she said.

The feature is expected to reach millions of viewers in the Caribbean and hundreds of millions more in September when it premieres in Latin America, a highly targeted tourism market for Jamaica.

Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill, Minister of Tourism gave his endorsement of the feature stating that “This fascinating special will bolster our on-going efforts to tap into the burgeoning Latin American market, as many viewers will certainly be lured to our shores by the captivating sights and sounds of our beautiful island.” The fact that it will showcase Jamaica to viewers in Caribbean and Latin American countries means it will provide a unique and invaluable opportunity to further market our destination and build brand Jamaica. It not only shines the spotlight on the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival but also puts our rich culture and history on display as we celebrate our 50th anniversary of independence.  The Minister also stated that “[He] was honoured to be associated with this brilliant initiative, which continues to redound to the benefit of our wonderful destination. I must commend Flow and HBO for the production of what has proven to be a very innovative and effective marketing tool, which continues to provide destination Jamaica with significant exposure in the Caribbean and Latin America.”

Michele English, President and COO of Columbus Communications Jamaica Limited, operators of Flow, emphasized the significance of the documentary  which showcases brand Jamaica during the momentous occasion of the country’s 50th anniversary of independence. “We are more than pleased to use our technology, platforms and partnerships to facilitate this kind of publicity and again demonstrate the tremendous transformative advantages we bring to the island.  Our partnership with HBO for the second year in a row, demonstrates our continued commitment to support, share and celebrate local culture with the rest of the world and at the same time, garner international attention for Jamaica.”

This is the second Jamaica Jazz and Blues feature that HBO has produced in the last two years.  Last year the HBO special One Love:  Jamaica Jazz & Blues 2011 was broadcasted to 300 million viewers in the Caribbean and Latin America.  This year however, viewers can expect to see much more, as the documentary will go beyond spotlighting the great music and entertainment of the festivalbut will also pay tribute to Jamaica’s 50 years of Independence.

The feature will make its television debut on HBO in the Caribbean on Saturday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m. with a repeat broadcast on Monday, August 6 at 9:35 p.m. . HBO is broadcast on Flow channel 518.
