The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is reporting continued success in its efforts to reduce theft of electricity, in St. Catherine, one of the parishes exhibiting a high rate of this occurrence.
For the month of July, the Company executed ten strike force operations in which 1,037 ‘throw-ups’, (or illegal wires thrown unto JPS lines), were removed. JPS teams also discovered 61 cases of meter irregularities, including the use of meter bypasses and other devices.
Subsequent to these operations, 17 persons were charged with the offence of the illegal abstraction of electricity.
This year JPS has committed US$30 million – covering capital investments and operational expenses to the fight against electricity theft.
