Jamaica now under Tropical Storm Watch

ODPEM | 2012-08-25 00:00:00

The Meteorological Service has advised that we are now under a Tropical Storm Watch. The public is advised to either commence or complete preparations in the event that Jamaica is adversely impacted by Tropical Storm Isaac.

The forecast is that from Friday night into Saturday heavy rainfall could impact the entire island but mainly the northeastern parishes. The center of Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to pass near the northeast coast of Jamaica. This could bring sections of the island under the influence of tropical storm conditions. Outbreaks of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, reaching near 300 millimeters (12 inches) over the next 48 hours could result in flash flooding and landslides. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall can cause flooding of all major waterways namely gullies, rivers, streams, fords, and streets as well as low lying areas.

In preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac the public is being asked to:

· Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm. Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.

 · Avoid driving vehicles into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow vehicles to cross safely.

· Ensure that emergency supplies are in place and continue to monitor the radio for further updates.

The public is being reminded that Tropical Storm Isaac is not fully organized therefore preparation is needed for all eventualities.

The ODPEM will continue to monitor the situation and updates will be issued accordingly.
