2021 Mathematical Olympiad

Jamaican schools operated in new modes, schedules shifted unpredictably, and face-to-face encounters were sharply curtailed. Even so, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, through the Department of Mathematics, successfully completed its programmes in all three divisions. These are the Senior Olympiad, the Junior Olympiad, and the International Division. This year, the Senior Mathematical Olympiad comprised three rounds. It began on March 21 and ended on June 26. A total of 737 students from 18 schools entered the competition. The Junior Olympiad also comprised three rounds. It began on April 15 and ended on June 25. A total of 2456 students from 68 schools entered the competition. BRONZE MEDAL IN CENTRO A Jamaican team of two students competed in the 2021 Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad (CENTRO). Hosted by Columbia, this year’s Olympiad was held in a virtual mode from August 9 – 15. The Jamaican team consisted of Aayush Jain of Ardenne High School and Shellane Shettleworth of Montego Bay High School . Aayush Jain won a Bronze Medal, and became Jamaica’s first medalist since 2016. A total of 12 countries from around the region competed in the 2021 CENTRO. Hosted by Costa Rica, this year’s Olympiad was held in a virtual mode from October 15 – 23. The Jamaican team consisted of Jaheim Harris of St. Jago High, Kyle Pratt of Campion College and Karthik Purushotham of Hillel Academy High, Jaheim Harris won an Honourable Mention. A total of 21 countries from the Latin American and Caribbean region competed in the 2021 OIM. TOP SCHOOLS The top schools in the 2021 Senior Olympiad are: 1. Immaculate Conception High 2. Alvernia Preparatory In The International Division, Jamaica competed in two Olympiads, the Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad (CENTRO) and the Iberoamerican Mathematical Olympiad (OIM). In the CENTRO, Aayush Jain of Ardenne High won a Bronze Medal, earning Jamaica’s first international medal since 2016.
