The loss of a spouse is always a painful experience and I can only imagine the deep grief Sheila and family are experiencing at this time. Mr Hart was an exceptional entrepreneur and philanthropist who made an outstanding contribution to tourism, especially in western Jamaica. He worked assiduously to develop the business sector inMontego Bay, and also recognised the importance of developing the citizens through his close involvement in the work of numerous educational and community institutions. During this difficult time as we reflect on his life, I trust that we will remember his legacy and the profound impact he has had on the lives of numerous Jamaicans. SIR PATRICK ALLEN Governor General Anexceptional entrepreneur andphilanthropist TONY HART, CD, was not only a pioneer in business, enterprise, philanthropy, and more, he was an exemplary Jamaican who served his country with distinction. His work to transform the city of Montego Bay, which led to the greater development of the parish of St James, is unmatched. Indeed, Tony’s work touched many lives, and Jamaica is the grateful beneficiary of his vision and life’s work. Though born in Kingston in 1932, Tony adopted Montego Bay as his own and developed a career that made him a stalwart, legendary businessman and a leader in inspiring economic development. His service to Jamaica spanned more than 60 years, transforming the face of many businesses. His work, over the years, advanced the development of the north coast, making the Montego Freeport the heart of development in the western end of the island. Tony’s life exemplified service and benevolence, having served in many sectors, including politics. He was campaign manager, parish councillor for six years; he ran as a candidate for the Jamaica Labour Party in 1972 and was part of the team to form the National Democratic Movement. Tony’s contribution in philanthropy is legendary. He genuinely cared about people, and he understood that educationwas a key factor in success. He firmly believed that children should have a strong foundation in their early years, hence he established computer centres in many primary schools. Tony’s work and legacy provided a road map for entrepreneurs on how to be successful in business and life. Indeed, this nation is grateful to the Hart family for Tony’s contribution to national development. For his distinguished and faithful service to Jamaica, the Government honoured him with the country’s fifth-highest honour – Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD). He was also inducted into the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica’s Hall of Fame; conferred with a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa , from the University of Technology; and with a Doctor of Commerce, honoris causa , from the Northern Caribbean University. Although he had a lifetime of accomplishment, Tony believed that his greatest blessings were his wife and four children, who carry on his legacy in contributing to building Jamaica. On behalf of the Government of Jamaica, I extend condolences to Tony’s family and friends. May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine on him.
