Dr Gloria Robinson, Ciboney’s HR and Training Director was growing increasingly irritated with how HEART trainees were being unfairly treated during the work experience at many of the properties. An educator herself, she felt it was wrong that the trainees were often relegated to menial tasks like “washing pots”. “I took a really very strong interest in the development of trained people for the industry. I was always very upset when these students came to observe, they were put in the kitchen to wash pots”, said Dr Robinson, who first ensured that Ciboney was not engaged in this practice, and then volunteered her time to advocate on behalf of HEART for greater industry acceptance of the trainees and graduates of HEART’s hospitality programmes. “I saw the wonderful things these young people could do with the help of HEART to improve the industry. And I am glad I'm alive to see it's happening today”, she continued. Over the years, Dr Robinson has been an influential voice for HEART in the tourism industry, tirelessly advocating the value of the hospitality training programmes, while volunteering her expertise as a member of the HEART Trust Board and as the Chair of the Management Advisory Committee for the Runaway Bay HEART Training Institute. Dr Robinson also shared her technical skills with the HEART team to design and successfully implement the Commis Chef and Executive Chef Programmes, handling a great deal of the negotiations and arrangements on behalf of the Agency with the Culinary Institute of America.
