AS JAMAICA celebrates 60 years of independence, there’s much to be said about the tremendous growth we have seen as a country. There are many advancements we have made as a nation. Through economic trials, and a modern pandemic, our ‘Jamaicanness’ stands strong. It is a testament to the resilience of our people. At this time of celebration and reflection, the nation’s oldest and largest bank celebrates its roots as far back as 185 years. The roots of National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited (NCB) extend to 1837 when theColonial Bank of London, England opened its doors on Harbour Street. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, the bank became Barclays Bank of Jamaica Limited and then eventually emerged in August 1977 as National Commercial Bank Jamaica Limited and now has presence in over 21 territories in the region through our majority shareholdings in Clarien Bank Limited in Bermuda and Guardian Holdings Limited. We celebrate 185 years to pay homage to the customers and employees that have been a part of our legacy and journey to becoming a leading financial institution in the region. NCB’s legacy can be characterised by continuously introducing world-class innovations to the Jamaican market place as well as nation building. Some of the firsts we have introduced to our nation include Keycard, automated banking machines (ABMs), intelligent ABMs, credit card instalment programmes (now Flexipay) and the public rollout of the first digital currency wallet to accommodate the Central Bank Digital Currency, which is backed as legal tender by the Bank of Jamaica. In terms of nation building, the NCB Foundation has donated in excess of $2 billion to charitable initiatives helping over 250,000 Jamaicans, with access to education being our primary focus throughout the years. As the country strives for greatness, NCB remains committed to serving and fulfilling our purpose of Empowering People. Unlocking Dreams. Building Communities.
