Kingston Wharf 75th Anniversary

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2020 40 KINGSTON WHARVES 75TH ANNIVERSARY T HE JOB of a crane operator is arguably the pinnacle of equipment operation on a port. “When you reach the position of a crane operator, it means you have attained the highest heights in terms of the equipment you are competent to handle on the ter- minal,” notes Courtney Gordon, crane operator at KingstonWharves Limited (KWL). Crane operators load and offload cargo from ships. These containers have to be handled carefully, and ships have to be stacked in a way that maintains their balance as they travel the high seas. Working with vessel planning, they carefully ex- ecute those critical functions and also help to coordinate and organise the terminal yard, ensuring that the right cargo is in the right place, at the right time. For example, if con- tainers are required for domestic or transshipment purpose, they must be stored in a manner that facilitates appropriate access. Courtney Gordon and his col- league, AndrewThomas, are two of the longest-serving crane operators at KingstonWharves. The pair have between them a combined over 50 Andrew Thomas at the controls.
