NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2020 46 KINGSTON WHARVES 75TH ANNIVERSARY KEMICA YOUNG – A POWERHOUSE IN THE WAREHOUSE Warehouse Coordinator Kemica Young is a powerhouse in the Kingston Wharves Total Logistics Facility warehouse. Her entry to KingstonWharves began in November 2015, with what was supposed to be a brief stint in the warehouse for the peak season. “I began at the Berth 5 Warehouse doing tallying, which is checking off the cargo as they are stripped from the containers,” Kemica recounts. However, with her winning attitude and unique focus, Kemica would not remain a seasonal worker for long. When the peak season ended, she wasoffered a full-time job as a warehouse clerk on contract, in January of 2016. Her functions included administrative duties, payroll and preparing discrepancy reports while also still performing tallying duties. Shortly thereafter, she was promoted to the position of warehouse clerk for Berth 5. Her portfolio was later expanded to performwarehouse clerk duties for all Kingston Wharves warehouses. “This meant that all admin clerks in the various warehouses had to send reports to me. I would re- view, assess, compile and send to the Terminal Manager,” she elaborates. The promotions kept coming. Kemica was later elevated to warehouse supervisor.“I felt good about the level of confidence being placed in me and it was good to feel like I was making progress. The dreamwas always to be one of the supervisors at the warehouse level,” Kemica discloses. In her current role, the 34-year-old supervises the daily operations of the warehouse – overseeing tallying, container stripping, delivery, stowing and administrative functions. “I enjoy the KWL experience, because I am always on the go. At times, it can be stressful, but it is rewarding.” Her supervisor, Senior Warehouse Coordinator Yanique Orr-White says of her, “Kemica is an inclusive individual who fosters teamwork and em- bodies the word dedication.” Mrs. Orr-White underscores,“KemicaYoung is integral to KWL’sWarehouse operations.She is an individual who exemplifies professionalism, always courteous and continually extends herself beyond the call of duty for both our internal and external customers.” Kemica is a graduate of the University of Technology, where she earned a BSc in Production Operation Management with a minor in Marketing.
