NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2020 13 MONTEGO BAY HIGH SCHOOL 85TH ANNIVERSARY T HE HIGHER School Certificate was intro- duced in 1949, and the first set of students sat their examinations in 1950. In 1978, ‘A’ level classes were transferred to the Montego Bay Community College along with the other sixth forms when it opened. Minister of Education, the Rev Ronald Thwaites, encouraged administrators of all secondary schools to include sixth forms as part of their ex- pansion plans. The idea to reintroduce the sixth form was concretised in 2013 by the chairman of the board of governors, Myrtle Dwyer. In September 2014, PROJECT IGNITE saw 13 Grade 12 students registered for the humanities and business and they were ranked first in the island by Educate Jamaica. Today, six years since the inception, we have added subjects inclusive of the sciences so that our students remain relevant and competitive as 21st-century citizens.
