NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, JUNE 20, 2021 6 MCCU 70TH ANNIVERSARY MESSAGE T HE MANCHESTER Co- operative Credit Union (1977) Limited (MCCU) cele- brated its 70th year of providing fi- nancial services to members in the parish of Manchester and those within a 20-mile radius outside of Christiana. The MCCU had its gene- sis in 1947 as a study group under the leadership of the late principal of the now Holmwood Technical High School, Mr F.R. Ricketts and his assistant, the late Mr Sydney Carter. The study group moved from house to house, sharing the vision and philosophy of the credit union and the prospects for the future. The credit union started with members coming mainly from the staff of Holmwood and members of the immediate com- munity. In 1977, after a series of amalgamations, the Manchester Co-operative Credit Union (1977) Limited was born. Since those days we have moved into more spacious offices; em- ployed professional managers and staff; we have expanded both branches and now have 77 employ- ees. Our financial performance, as of March 31, 2021, boasts the following accomplishments: Total assets – $ 7 billion Savings – $ 5.14 billion Loan portfolio – $3.47 billion Total membership – 48,105 members The MCCU is proud to have been serving the parish of Manchester and its surrounding communities for the last 70 years. The credit union celebrated this year’s mile- stone under the theme, ‘Building Communities …Fostering Growth’. The credit union’s community out- reach efforts and support for our community during the COVID-19 crisis has been commendable, such as providing various contributions to the local healthcare industry, a toy drive for Mandeville Regional Hospital, providing care packages for our senior members, and donat- ing tablets to various educational institutions. This pandemic has been difficult for everyone. It is more im- portant than ever that we protect the most vulnerable and take care of our community and make a dif- ference.
