DANEY-ANN S. THOMAS, JP PRESIDENT & CEO PortlandChamber of Commerce 50 years of invaluable service to Portland F IFTY YEARS in business is no small measure, especially in the financial sector. Having come this far, we pause to look back at our strides in the past, and also to cele- brate our present. We look back at the times we shared, our struggles and the sterling contributions made by our predecessors. We pause to recognise the birth of a new credit union on January 4, 1971 from the merger of two credit unions then operating in the parish on January 4, 1971. We have seen phenomenal growth and stability which resulted in our current status. The sterling leadership of our volunteers has assisted to take us to where we are today, and can be seen in the contribution our credit union has made to the movement, locally, regionally and internation- ally. We have seen our leaders rise to serve at the level of the board of the World Council of Credit Unions, having served as the pres- ident of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League and the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Unions. We salute you, Mrs Yvonne Ridguard-Harris. In this our 50th year, our general manager serves as the president of the Caribbean Credit Unions Managers Association and sits on numerous boards in the credit union movement. This is a testa- ment that Portland Co-operative Credit Union Limited is making its mark in the movement. We will continue to embrace technology while maintaining the personal touch that has kept us to- gether. Noteworthy is the fact that we have completed the expansion of our head office, and our next step is to build a new office in Buff Bay. Let us continue to offer quality service, to be socially responsible, prudent, and mindful of the needs of the less fortunate. Let us take part in celebrating the past 50 years and look forward to the next with the commitment of continuous development for the credit union and its members.
