Portland Co-Operative Credit Union Limited 50th Anniversary

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2021 29 PORTLAND CO-OP CREDIT UNION 50TH ANNIVERSARY 13 I AM proud, excited and honoured to be a part of the Portland Co- operative Credit Union. It is the true model of credit union in Jamaica – the credit union that has positively touched the life of every Portlander and beyond. I remember that little office where we started, which is now replaced by a land- mark in Port Antonio. The journey has been long and interesting, but it is crowned with success andmore success, abundance and goodwill. The credit union has been out- standing. It is evidence of prudence with a clear vision that guides its path and direction. This has been a wonderful example of the peo- ple working together with an open mind. It is a movement that binds us together as more than just friends and colleagues, but as a family. It is those little trickles, the pooling of resources of ordinary people that provide the abundance. Our chil- dren’s children will be blessed by the existence of the credit union. Commendation is in order for the visionary and strategic direction pro- vided by the leadership. Thanks to all thosewhowork tirelesslydaybyday to keepthe light shiningbright.Toa faith- ful and satisfiedmembership, I liftmy hat. To God be the glory, fromwhom all blessings flow. Congratulations on achieving 50 years – a milestone that history will record. This is my passion, and Iwill continue toencourageothers to share the experience. HOWARD PAULWELL Past President A journey crowned with success T HE PORTLAND Co-operative Credit Union is commended for serving Portlanders for 50 years. My earliest recollection of the credit union is that of an organisation trying to establish itself within the financial sector in the parish of Portland. It was a much-needed service, but efforts were met with limited success. Commendations to the present gen- eral manager and staff, who blazed an unprecedented trail in the manage- ment of the credit union. This man- agement provided much stability, while achieving significant successes which have benefited the people of the parish. The Portland Co-operative Credit Union is managed by a large cadre of professionals who provide the organi- sation with support and give much-ap- preciated service as board of directors, credit committee and supervisory com- mittee members. The credit union’s programmes and services bear good testament as it ca- ters to the needs of all of its members. The youth savers’ programme contin- ues to provide opportunities for sav- ings, scholarships and bursaries for the children. The members continue to benefit from low interest rate on loans, reasonable interest paid on sav- ings, equitable dividend paid on shares, donations, sponsorships, and financial counselling, thus leaving no one out of the organisation’s prosperity. The Portland Co-operative Credit Union has increased its suite of services through technology, which will benefit the members and further propel their development goals. Having served for 50 years, we look forward to having the credit union’s service for another 50 years, with more persons saving regularly, borrowing wisely, and repaying promptly so that everyone can enjoy what is going to be a long and prosperous future.
