EDUCATION AND TRAINING Real economic development will always be achieved when you have an edu- cated society. This is one of the main reasons why the PCCU continues to make significant investment in educational programmes to assist our members and their children. These programmes start at basic schools, with the creative ex- pression competition, then moves on to the (PEP) bursaries at primary school, which are awarded at the beginning of high school. These bursaries are perfor- mance-based and are guaranteed once the recipient maintain good averages while in high school. The programme continues at the tertiary level with the Howard Powell Scholarship, which values $225,000 per recipient. Each year, three students benefit from this scholarship. Tertiary students are also supported by the Special Educational Assistance Programme. Each year, a total of approximately $1.5million is usually allocated for this expenditure. TRAINING Training forms a large part of what we do at the Portland Co-operative Credit Union Ltd, where students are employed to work on a special programme called ‘Joy of Saving’ pageant contestants.
