S

ITUATED BETWEEN

Mineral Heights housing

scheme and the Percival

Patterson Highway in May Pen,

Clarendon, is a property with

swings, slides, jungle gym and

a yellow and grey building

displaying the map of

Jamaica, the national symbols

and the national heroes. This

is Midland Preparatory School.

It is currently home to 11

teachers, two volunteers and

110 students.

The school caters for

students from kindergarten to

grade six, with an average of

15 students per class which

allows for individual attention.

The school was established

in 1970 by the late Emile and

Idalee Turner, affiliates of the

Christian Brethren Assemble in

the Midland area.

Less than a decade after

Jamaica gained her

independence, Christian

Brethren elder, Emile Turner,

opened the Midland Prep

School doors with two

teachers and seven students.

The principal in the group

was the late Mercedes

Edwards, who remained in the

position until 1996 when she

retired. During her tenure, she

coined the school’s motto:

‘Knowledge Giveth Light’, and

adopted the school song, ‘We

Build Our School on Thee,

Oh Lord’.

JOURNEY TO PRESENT

Over the years, we have

embraced the local phrase: ‘Wi

likkle but we tallawah’ by being

the biblical David slaying all the

Goliaths that came our way.

Our outstanding average

passes in the national

standardise test (Common

Entrance and GSAT) have

resulted in most of our

students being placed in

traditional high schools.

We have had Government

Scholarships along with other

scholarships and we were ranked

third in the parish of Clarendon

for top GSAT passes in 2014. We

have consistently been ranked in

the top 10 for the parish.

Our students have also

excelled through extra-

curricular activities by

achieving gold, silver and

bronze medals in the JCDC

competition. We were

awarded gold medals in the

parish and national finals in

4-H for two consecutive years.

Our co-curricular programme

is 4-H club, environment club,

quiz, spelling bee, math club,

scout, culture club, netball,

cricket and football.

We have come this far by

faith.

As a Christian-based institution,

we cater for all students no

matter the denomination or

social background.

At Midland, we believe that

the power of an education lies

in its ability to empower and

transform the lives of

individuals, and we strive to

achieve this at all times.

Our aim is to cater to the

whole man, spiritually, mentally,

physically and socially.
