Radio Jamaica Celebrating 70 Years
Page 62 Sunday July 4, 2021 RG Media Group recently launched a year-long celebration to mark the anniversary of one of its flagship brands, Radio Jamaica 94FM, in Radio’s historic studio one. Located at Broadcasting House, the event took place exactly 70 years after the station’s first broadcast on July 9, 1950. The lively celebration was hosted by Wesley Burger of the popular Too Live Crew afternoon show. Guest announcers were Paula-Anne Porter Jones, Daniel Thompson, Dadrian Gordon, and Derrick Wilks, with music selections provided by DJ Delly. The station reached out to Karl Samuda, the Minister of Education, who was very generous in his anniversarymessage. TheReverendRoyDodman spoke on behalf of St Stephens United Church, which, incidentally, wears the crown of the longest-running religious programme on Radio Jamaica 94FM, 68 years to be exact. Wow, what an achievement! Outside of the very educational narrative on the history of Radio Jamaica, the event featured live performances by Yasus Afari, Freddie McGregor, and Beenie Man. The happy 70th - anniversary celebration was concluded with the cutting of a limited - edition cake of extraordinary proportions. The cake was cut by the happy parents, Gary Allen, CEO, and Claire Grant, GM Broadcasting. The celebrations will continue through the year to July 2021 and will consist of a series of events, including church services, reflections, interviews, as well as legacy and historical features. The celebrations will also be highlighted by TV campaigns, radio campaigns, and print advertising. There will be a series of on-air competitions and an anniversary supplement inserted in the Sunday Gleaner.
