Whitter Village 10 Years Later

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2020 16 O NE OF the remarkable things about the restaurants at Whitter Village is that they were all designed to face the north, ensuring that, for most of the day, patrons are able to have shade, in order to enjoy prolonged outdoor dining. The eateries, all located within the courtyard, which captures the ambience of an old Jamaican town centre, were designed by one of Jamaica’s leading architects, Clifton Yap, the mastermind behind some of Jamaica’s most magnificent con- temporary buildings. For property manager Mason Bird, while the restaurants are doing very well in terms of patronage, the need to ensure proper sanitation to guarantee that diners feel at ease has been of utmost importance. Added to that, the areas reserved for dining out in the open are spa- cious, therefore, engendering phys- ical distancing, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It eases the whole idea and notion of social distancing because a lot of the restaurants in Montego Bay are not allowing persons to dine in. If you look at our plaza, we have tables that are spread out, with so- cial distancing in mind, and we also hired persons who do solely and wholly sanitation,” he explained. “So as you get up from a table, we have people who float in the areas and sanitise the place and they san- itise at the point of persons leaving so that no new person sits at a con- taminated area,” Bird added. The eateries within the property include Kreme Supreme, Wrap and Roll Juices Delight, Rolly Polly, KFC and Pizza Hut franchises, Sunrise Catering and Fine Foods, and Little Panda Express. In addition there is a branch of the chain supermarket, Progressive Grocers and the Express Convenience Store, which is akin to a mini-mart.
