Because, as most people would imagine, consular offices are only placed by foreign governments at locations in which they have utmost confidence. The office of the Honorary Consul in Montego Bay, under the super- vision of the High Commission of Canada to Jamaica, was established to undertake several functions in the west, among these, provide a range of consular services to Canadian cit- izens visiting, working, studying, re- siding or detained in the parishes of St Elizabeth,Westmoreland, Hanover, St James, Trelawny, and St Ann. Though temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, prior to the pandemic, the office was open on a part-time basis fromMondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., to provide in-person services to Canadian consular clients and accommodate the submission of Canadian visa applications. In addition to those services, the office also kept abreast of general security, public safety, emergency services and local trends whichmay impact Canadian citizens in the area. A part of the office’s mandate is to maintain close relations and regular contact with government officials, government authorities, consular network wardens, important local contacts such as airline representa- tives, hospital administrators, and the diplomatic community serving in the same jurisdiction, amongother things.
