R PETER David Phillips, minister

of finance, won The Gleaner’s top

Honour Award when he was named

Man of the Year during the 35th

Annual Gleaner Honour Awards

luncheon held on Monday, January 25, at The

Jamaica Pegasus.

Phillips also took home The Gleaner Honour

Award for Public Service for his role in managing

the country’s challenging financial portfolio

through the current IMF-impacted environment

and the creation of EPOC to monitor the country’s

performance during this period.

“I accept the award with great appreciation,

but quite frankly, it is an award to the Jamaican

people,” said Dr Phillips.

He further paid tribute to Prime Minister Portia

Simpson Miller and his cabinet colleagues, whom

he said supported the economic programme being

pursued by his dedicated ministerial team.

While basking in the celebration of excellence,

Dr Phillips said The Gleaner Honour Awards

highlighted the magic and miracles of business

innovation, voluntary social services, creativity

and artistry of Jamaicans.

“If we can get it all right, we will become the

greatest country on Earth,” he said.
