Protecting the rightsholders in the music industry is of utmost importance in a country like Jamaica, where music is a significant part of our culture and economy. These legal rights are cornerstones of the music industry, ensuring that creators and contributors are fairly compensated for their work and that their intellectual property is secured. The Significance of Copyright Copyright in Jamaica is governed by the Copyright Act, 1993 (“the Act”), which grants exclusive rights to creators for their original works, including musical compositions, lyrics, and recordings. These rights allow artists to control how their music is used, distributed, and monetized. Without copyright, musicians would struggle to earn a living from their art, as anyone could freely use and profit from their creations without permission or payment.
