NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, MAY 11, 2025 21 MMS 35TH ANNIVERSARY FEATURE BE PREPARED! As the 2025 hurricane season approaches, we must be prepared so that we can minimise, if not eliminate, the loss of life and property. Here are some tips: THE HOUSE • Check doors, windows, roofs of homes, offices, and other buildings before the start of the season and effect the necessary repairs. • Make sure to acquire storm shutters if they are needed. • If a hurricane is in the forecast, remove paintings and hangings from walls and store them in a dry area. • Store rugs and mats in a dry place to prevent water damage should flooding occur. • Store water the day before the hurricane. • Defrost and cook meat, or, if there is a deep freeze, put several bags of ice in it and store. Should there be a power cut, the ice will help to preserve the meat for up to 3-5 days. • Begin to shop for tinned food and other non-perishable items at the start of the hurricane season. This will save you from the rush in the supermarkets should a hurricane be in the forecast. • Secure important papers and other valuables. • Agree on an evacuation plan with your family. THE YARD • Trim trees that could possibly cause damage to roofs. • Anchor young trees/shrubs with guy wires. • Remember to remove the hanging and other potted plants to a safe location. • Make sure that vehicles are parked in a safe place. • If pets are kept outdoors, ensure that there is a dry place for them to ride out the storm.
