NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, MAY 11, 2025 28 V terans ,We Celeb ate You! WHEN MANPOWER & Maintenance Services Ltd (MMS) was founded, Monica Young was on the ground floor. She was first employed to the newly formed Caribbean health Management Consultants Limited in 1988, and then made the transition to MMS as its first employee, when it was established some two years later. As Monica recalls, “I was recruited through an employment agency operated by former well-known talk show host, June Hines. She informed me of the job, and I was interviewed and selected.” Since that time, Monica has worked on and off with MMS for a total of about 30 years and has seen the organisation through many changes, even as she has also grown and developed. “I started as a Clerk and have gone through nine career changes. I also served as Administrative Assistant, Contracts Monitoring Officer; Quality Assurance Coordinator; Human Resources Manager, Director of Human Resources Management and my current role as General Manager, HR Business Services,” she said. “I have experienced tremendous growth both personally and professionally. Academically, I have progressed from secondary level competencies to achieving qualifications at the undergraduate and post graduate levels. I have also benefitted from mentorship from the Chairman, Audrey Hinchcliffe, that has shaped my career,” she explained. In response to being asked why she chose Human Resource Management as a career path, she responded, “I think HR chose me. In 2003 the post of Human Resources Manager became vacant, and I was asked to undertake the duties temporarily because of my well-rounded knowledge of the operations of the company. After performing the duties for some time, the Chairman (Managing Director then) approached me and enquired whether I would be interested in serving permanently. After negotiations and advice from friends and family, I accepted, and the rest is history.” What are some of the high points of her job? “I believe people are an organization’s most valuable resources.
