NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2020 5 GRADUATION YEARBOOK – MT ALVERNIA HIGH SCHO L Hats off off to Mt Alvernia High School Mt Alvernia graduates use their heads in their creative display of grad- uation mortar boards. Dedicated and determined to excel T HE LADIES of Mount Alvernia High School are dedicated and determined to excel, de- spite various challenges. To ensure this, the principal and her staff have ingeniously created ways to keep the students motivated, which have created an environment for aca- demic, social and emotional growth. In previous years the school sought to make changes which started with an addition to the name, Mount Alvernia High School, ‘The Home of Ladies’. This change drastically improved the way the now 95-year-old institution sees itself, which increased students’ performance; thus raising the standards. There is no doubt that this improvement, along with pas- sionate and innovative educators at its helm, has caused the school to be seen as one of the top 19 ivy-league schools in Jamaica. Currently ranked as one of the best-performing traditional high schools in Jamaica and within the Western region, Mount Alvernia High School proudly wears its fifth-place position with a 97.5 av- erage in the Caribbean Secondary Examination Council. The school excels not only in sports and the performing arts but currently re- cords a 99.4 past mark of all its students, as it strives to maintain excellence as stated in its mantra ‘Ad Astra Per Aspera’ – ‘To the Stars Through Difficulties’. Lower School vice-principal,Throy Haughton. Upper School vice-principal, Mrs Carolin Hume.
