Radio Jamaica 75th Anniversary Feature

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, AUGUST 31, 2025 28 RADIO JAMAICA 75TH ANNIVERSARY FEATURE | THE SUNDAY GLEANER | AUGUST 31, 2025 Miss Lucy from Lucea, Hanover Radio Jamaica 75 years, wishing you 75 more years. I wake up with Paula, Derrick, and Chevauni in the mornings and then wait patiently for Hotline with Mr Mullings, Dr Taylor, and ‘Church Sister’ – Mrs Shields,’ she is like the eye in the egg. If I am singing, she is there. Every tune, she is there. And then there is “X and Y” with Mrs Shields and Daniel Thompson. People in the streets say X and Y remind them of Alan and Dorraine Samuels. People sit down to listen to this feature. Everybody loves radio. We have become family because if the people on radio are hurt, I hurt deeply as well because radio is my family. Radio Jamaica is like family. I call to check on other listeners like ‘Birdcup’ and ‘Miss Marcia’ from Islington. The radio causes us to become one, and everybody is looking out to hear us. If I wake up one morning and my radio isn’t working, I am mad because I can’t get to hear anything. I know something is missing me. RJR is like a university to me. I learn a lot by listening. Our lives would not be the same without RJR. I get up every morning to go on radio. It is like a job for me. I wait up to three hours before I get through on the Hotline. A lot of people ask how we get on so often, but it is because I have three phones working with. If I don’t catch [The Hotline] on one, I catch it on the other or another. I just love RJR! RJR is a people station, and It doesn’t matter who you are. I still can’t believe that I could be on RJR speaking my patois. Radio is my life. Radio Jamaica is our life. Deborah Allen I have been listening to RJR from the day I was born. Our radio was always on. The stories were entertaining for my family. Every Friday night, RJR would play the top 10 songs for the week. We would dance and sing along. I loved Allan Magnus. He loved to play the “Three-legged man” and Harper Valley P. T. A. I enjoyed them, too. He was humorous and connected with his audience. On Sunday, it was Uncle Barry’s on the Children’s Bible Club.Today, I’m still listening and I love “Too Live Crew” with Dahlia and Johnny. They are entertaining and informative. Listening to RJR94 makes me feel like part of a big family. VOICES OF THE PEOPLE
