Radio Jamaica 75th Anniversary Feature

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, AUGUST 31, 2025 29 RADIO JAMAICA 75TH ANNIVERSARY FEATURE | THE SUNDAY GLEANER | AUGUST 31, 2025 Comrade from St James Happy 75th anniversary to the management and staff of Radio Jamaica Ltd! You have been a trusted voice in our homes, cars, and places of business for generations. Your programming has not only informed and entertained, but has also been a vital thread in the fabric of Jamaican life. I hope we’ll be celebrating many more milestones. Here’s to another 75 years and beyond! Some of my most memorable moments with RJR include listening to Mrs Monteith during school breaks; enjoying “The Good Morning Man” show with Alan Magnus; the distinct and trusted news forecasts from Dorraine Samuels; late-night insights on Sharp Talk with Michael Sharp; the Saturday evening Top 10 Countdown at 7:15; riveting sports commentary from Lance Whittaker, especially his schoolboy football and athletics coverage; relaxing to the Sunday afternoon programme ‘Palav’ with Gerry McDaniel; the 10:15 stories – especially the unforgettable “Clayton Place”; and of course, the ever-engaging Hotline with Mrs Barbara Gloudon, Ms Haughton, and my favourite cherry QQ, Emily Shields. Thank you for the memories, the voices, and the enduring legacy. Long live Radio Jamaica! Nicole from Spanish Town, St Catherine I have been a Radio Jamaica listener since I was about ve-six years old because my late father was a listener from his early days. I became part of the next generation of RJR generation listeners. I love RJR because it’s a great local station for news, information, current affairs, in-depth, documentary features, and more lead stories from home and abroad as well as music and entertainment from past to present. My fondest memories are from April 2014 when I went on my rst ever interviews on Jamaican Morning with the late great Mr Alan Magnus and Mrs Paula Ann Porter Jones. Back then, I did an interview about my life as a person with Autism Spectrum Disorder. After the interview, my mother, who accompanied me, was so emotional that she cried, and the two hosts embraced her with a hug. Also, on March 26, 2019, was the day I was so devastated and mourned after I heard the sad news of the death of the RJR and TVJ great news icon, Dorraine Samuels. She is still truly missed by fans, listeners and viewers who were tuned in to hear her on weekday mornings and throughout the evenings on Prime Time News. I want to also ‘big up’ all of the past and current Radio Jamaica 94FM personalities that I stay tuned to on this great station. Salutes You! Here’s to RJR: Still hitting all the right notes, still making the airwaves dance, and still proving that good radio is timeless. Congratulations on 75 years of broadcasting brilliance.
