These include not only financial support, but mentorship and access to growth opportunities. The FHC Foundation’s scholarship initiative is part of this mission, aiming to reduce financial barriers and unlock the full potential of students who show academic promise and determination. “The goal of our scholarship programme is not just to fund education; it’s to ignite futures,” said Michelle Tracey, assistant general manager – marketing, communications & member experience. “Education is one of the most powerful tools we can offer our youth, and through the FHC Foundation, we are proud to continue making that investment.” Among the recipients of the 2024 scholarships are Shemore Howell and Lavana Shorter, who were awarded the prestigious FHC Sports Education Scholarship. That commitment was once again affirmed at the Annual Awards Ceremony held on August 29, 2024, at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, where the JTACCUL recognised outstanding academic achievement through its 2024 PEP Bursary and Tertiary Scholarship Programme. SCHOLARSHIPS TO GO FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2025 4 THE SAGICOR Foundation Scholarship has been a transformative force, helping hundreds of young Jamaicans with their educational pursuits. In 2024 alone, 173 students at the secondary and tertiary levels came closer to completing their studies because of this support. The programme, however, goes beyond the millions of dollars spent, as it places great emphasis on volunteerism, leadership and innovation. In keeping with those core values, two new awards were introduced in 2024, the R. Danny Williams Visionary Award and the Chairman’s Innovation Award. This holistic approach helps to nurture the potential of the recipients beyond their academics, making them ready to enact positive change in their communities and, by extension, Jamaica, Land We Love. Each year, the awardees show great tenacity despite their various circumstances. Shenielle Gayle, the 2024 Sagicor Foundation Scholar is one example. She was the inaugural recipient of the Chairman’s Innovation Award. This recognises a tertiary scholar Contributed President and CEO of Sagicor Group Jamaica, Christopher Zacca (left), who is also chairman of Sagicor Foundation Jamaica, presenting the first-ever Chairman’s Innovation award to 2024 Scholar Shenielle Gayle at the June 2024 awards ceremony. She reminded us that with a positive mindset and hard work, we dare not limit our dreams. Applications are now open. The 2025 scholarship application portal has been open since May 1. Persons have until May 30 to apply for a chance to secure support of up to J$300,000 per year for tertiary students and J$50,000 per annum for secondary students. SCHOLARSHIPS TO GO FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2025 6 THE JPS Foundation continues to support students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through its Power Up Scholarship Programme. This initiative aims to reduce the financial barriers many students face due to the high costs associated with STEM-related courses. In 2024, the Foundation invested over $7.5 million, benefiting 28 students across Jamaica. The scholarships and grants supported both secondary and tertiary students, including first-year university STEM students, students at teachers’ colleges specialising in STEM, and final-year engineering students at the University of Technology (UTech). Head of the JPS Foundation Sophia Lewis highlighted that the scholarship programme is a key investment in Jamaica’s future, allowing young Jamaicans to gain the skills needed for a future-ready workforce. “STEM continues to play a major role in the growth and development of several industries, which is why it is one of our key areas of focus at the JPS Foundation,” she said. “Through the financial assistance we provide, we are ensuring that students with a passion for problem-solving can access the resources needed to boost innovation and help us achieve a technology-enabled society, as outlined in Jamaica’s Vision 2030 – National Outcome 11.” In addition to financial support, the JPS Foundation introduced a mentorship component to further enrich the students’ academic and personal development. “We wanted the relationship with our scholars to go beyond financing their education, to demonstrate that we also have an interest in their personal development,” said Lewis. “The addition of the mentorship component affords us the opportunity to add value to our recipients’lives through the guidance and camaraderie that is built between themselves and their JPS mentors.” This holistic approach ensures that students not only receive financial support, but also gain the guidance they need to succeed, both academically and professionally. Through these initiatives, the JPS Foundation continues to invest in the next generation of innovators and leaders. THANKS TO the JPS Foundation East-West Power (EWP) Korea scholarship grants, six final-year University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) engineering students can now breathe easier. The students – Geri-Ann Miller, Gabrielle Beepat, Ackeem Grant, Allroy Horne, Jordon Jackson, and Le-Rhone Miller – were awarded a collective grant valued at $3 million to cover their final year of studies. For Grant, a civil engineering student, securing the grant was both a source of immense pride and relief. “Without this scholarship, I would have had to work to pay my tuition, which increases each year. My mother is the only one supporting me, and she has three children,”he shared. The scholarship, he explains, alleviates the financial burden, allowing him to focus on his studies. Chemical engineering student Geri-Ann Miller expressed similar sentiments. “My parents are educators, and I also have a younger brother starting high school, so this grant will ease the financial strain for my final year,” she said. Miller, who learned of her selection while participating in a work and travel programme in the United States, shared that her decision to pursue engineering came after being inspired by her father’s advocacy for STEM. JPS President and CEO Hugh Grant, a UTech alumnus, shared his journey with the students, emphasising the potential they have to shape the future of the energy sector. “The energy industry is in transition, and we are looking to unlock a cleaner future,” Grant said. “Your skills are in high demand, and we need great minds like you to help shape the future of energy.” Grant encouraged the students to follow a three-point life code for success: “Be the leader you want others to be, always be an avid learner, and be prepared to go the extra mile.” These scholarships, he reminded them, are a gateway to opportunities and success. It is indeed an honour. No amount of words can express how grateful I am for this, it means a lot to me. I am actually overjoyed as I will not have to worry about my tuition for this academic year.” Nathan Hansle: “I am delighted that I have gotten an academic commendation and I made the Dean’s Honour Roll based on my academic performance in the 2023-2024 year, my first year. I’ve attached the letters for reference.” This would not have been possible without the support of you, your team and Carreras along this journey and for that, I say a big thank you.” Shannon Green: “I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for awarding me the Carreras Scholarship. I am deeply honoured to be selected as a recipient of this prestigious scholarship, and I am incredibly grateful for your generosity and support.” Amoy McNeil-Jones: “Good day, it has been a great privilege to be a two-time Carreras scholarship recipient. Once when I started out and when I’m about to finish. Thank you very much.” Zoya Edwards: “Thank you once again for awarding me this scholarship Your investment in me is highly appreciated and will not go in vain.” Kaiheem Williams: “I appreciate the wonderful new that I was chosen for this scholarship. I am deeply thankful for this support towards my tuition and also, appreciative of the well wishes for my academic journey.” Addis Clarke: “I would like to extend my thank you to the entire Carreras Ltd Group for the provision of the scholarship. I am very thankful as I had received a spot on the Dean’s list during last year October but haven’t gotten the time to share it. Thank you.” Azailiah Smith: “It’s amazing how far you’re willing to go when someone believes in you: Kate Kacvinsky. Where do I begin: What words, if any, would be sufficient to express my gratitude. On July 15, 2022, I submitted my very first application for a $50,000 grant. Upon submission, I realised my application was blank. With the little I had, I called. The staff were so gracious and helpful. A month later, I was called to an interview. Once again, you listened, it felt right. I felt supported. What I thought was an interview for a grant turned into way more than I could have ever imagined. Two years later, the support remains the same. Throughout this [tertiary] journey, your support has been unwavering. From opening the door, giving me the opportunity to first attend to helping me close my undergraduate chapter. Your contribution has been invaluable. I will never ever find the right words to express just how grateful I am. I will however strive to make not only myself and my family proud but to make each and every one of you proud. I hope to fly the Carreras banner high. To speak of your company with pride and joy. To make the most of the opportunities you have given me. Thank you for being apart of my journey. Thank you for helping me to write my story. Thank you for giving me a chance for A BETTER TOMORROW!”

SCHOLARSHIPS TO GO FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2025 13 ONCE UNCERTAIN of his future, today, Christopher Dawes is charting a bold path forward fuelled by purpose and gratitude. A proud recipient of the Supreme Ventures Foundation 20th Anniversary Scholarship, he is transforming challenges into opportunities and dreams into direction. Though initially drawn to politics or medicine, Dawes’ vision shifted in high school, inspired by educator Antoinette Foster and his former guidance counsellor, Simone Gibbs. Through their encouragement, he found meaning in the classroom and realised that education wasn’t just a career – it was his calling. He is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education. Dawes is one of 20 recipients of the SVF 20th Anniversary Scholarship, a life-changing initiative launched in 2021 to support former wards of the State. Valued at approximately $4 million over four years, the scholarship – offered in partnership with the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) – provides full tuition, housing, meals, and miscellaneous support. The scholarship programme also provides life skills training, including driving lessons and obtaining a driver’s licence, financial literacy workshops, and a JMMB investment account with an initial deposit of J$10,000 to help scholars plan for long-term success. Since receiving the scholarship, Dawes has grown in confidence and focus. “The SVF Scholarship gave my confidence and self-belief an incredible boost. Being chosen among so many others reminded me that I truly belong in this space (and) that I have what it takes to succeed and make a meaningful impact,”he says. Dawes’journey is a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and community. With deep gratitude, he acknowledges the many individuals who stood by him – the CPFSA, SVF, family, mentors, and friends. Their love and guidance helped shape him into the man he is today. With gratitude and purpose, he moves forward not just as a student, but as a mentor-in-the-making. His dream? To empower others the way he was empowered.
