Scholarships To Go 2025

SCHOLARSHIPS TO GO FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2025 16 MONAE WILLIAMS, affectionately known as ‘Moana,’ is a shining example of academic excellence and leadership at Northern Caribbean University (NCU). Currently in her final year of a course of study for a Bachelor of Science in Business Management Studies with a concentration in marketing, Williams has consistently earned honour roll status while actively serving as the acting president of the NCU Marketing Association and as a dedicated student adviser. These roles reflect her deep passion for service, leadership, and continuous growth. Her path, however, has not been without challenges. Like many young Jamaicans, Williams has faced financial hardships and the emotional weight of breaking generational cycles. But her determination, resilience, and support network have guided her forward. A turning point came in 2021 when she was awarded the Supreme Ventures Foundation (SVF) 20th Anniversary Scholarship – an initiative launched in partnership with the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA). Valued at approximately J$100 million over four years, the scholarship supports 20 former wards of the State by covering tuition, boarding, a subsistence stipend, and miscellaneous expenses. Beyond financial assistance, the programme offers life-changing development tools, including financial literacy sessions, driving lessons, and the establishment of a JMMB investment account seeded with J$10,000, equipping students for long-term personal and professional success. “Receiving the scholarship was a turning point,” Williams said. “It lifted a heavy burden and gave me the freedom to focus on what truly matter: my education and future. It affirmed that I am not alone on this journey and that my dreams are valid and worth pursuing.” Williams has seized numerous growth opportunities. She attended the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) conferences, gaining first-hand insights into finance, investing, and the power of professional networks. “Those moments reaffirmed my dreams and strengthened my confidence,” she shared. Now on track to graduate with honours, Williams is focused on her ultimate goal: helping her community not just survive but thrive. Backed by the unwavering support of SVF, the CPFSA, and her family, Monae Williams stands as a powerful reminder of what can happen when opportunity meets determination. Her story continues to inspire others to rise above their circumstances and walk boldly in their purpose.
