Yet, her determination and desire to create a better future for herself served as motivation to push forward, perform well, and seek the financial help she needed. Now, a few months away from completing a Bachelor of Science in Dental Laboratory Technology at the University of Technology (UTech), the support from the VM Scholars Programme has been a game-changer, providing the critical push she needed to get to the finish line. Weir is the recipient of the first-ever VM Pensioner’s Bursary, facilitated through voluntary contributions from VM Group Pensioners, and awarded to a qualifying tertiary- level student in their final year. “When I heard that I had been selected, it was more than financial support to me - it was hope. It reassured me that I could cross the finish line no matter how difficult the race had been. The bursary didn’t just help me financially. It introduced me to a lifelong relationship with the VM Foundation, including mentorship sessions that have been invaluable to my personal growth and career development,” she shared. Weir got a much-needed $175,000 towards completing her studies. She performed exceptionally in the first semester, with a near-perfect report card but was yet again faced with a financial struggle as outstanding fees threatened her eligibility to sit second semester exams. The VM Foundation once again stepped in, providing additional support, allowing her to settle those costs. As she looks to the future, she is grateful to the VM Foundation for being part of the ‘village’ that is enabling her to realise a dream that once seemed impossible. Besides her plans to help brighten smiles through her dental career, she also has a deep desire to give back to the community and encourage others with similar struggles to believe in their dreams.
